Fairfield firefighters were on a run all day Wednesday responding to three fires in under eight hours in addition to EMS and alarm calls.

The fire calls started with a call at 12:52 p.m., to a fire on the third floor of a home on Toilsome Hill Road, said Chief Kyran Dunn.

Responding firefighters found an attic fire they were able to extinguish with damage limited to the attic area, the chief said.

A few hours later, Dunn said the department responded to a fire around 6:22 p.m. for a reported boiler fire on Winnepoge Drive. Dunn said the boiler was unhooked, but the rest of the home was unscathed.

Just minutes after dousing the boiler fire, firefighters responded to a two-car crash on the Merritt Parkway around 7:17 p.m. to find two cars fully engulfed in flames and the occupants outside the vehicles, "talking like old friends," the chief said.

Both cars were destroyed in the blaze that shut down the southbound side of the parkway between exits 42 and 44 as crews knocked back the flames.

The good news, he said, is that no one was injured in any of the fire calls.

"When you have a day with alarms going off all over the place, you hope for the best, but of course, you have to be prepared for the worst," Dunn said.
